While election day isn’t until later this month, advance voting starts in one week on April 9.

Here’s what you need to know regarding if you can vote, how to vote, and where to vote in the 2019 Alberta provincial election.

Voter ID

You need to bring ID that proves your identity and home address. Your Alberta driver’s license, Alberta Identification card, or government-issued/school documents will work as well. Picture ID is not a requirement.

If it is not stated on your ID, you’ll also need to bring something to establish your current address, which can be anything from a bank statement to a utility bill.

Find a list of acceptable IDs here.

Where to vote

All eligible voters must vote at their designated voting station on Voting Day. You can find the locations of voting places by using the Government of Alberta’s interactive voting station map on their website.

However, if you’re advance voting, you can do so at any advance voting station throughout the entire province.

Voting by mail

You can request a voting package and cast your ballot by mail if you are:

  • Physically incapacitated
  • Away from your electoral division
  • An inmate
  • An election officer, candidate, official agent or scrutineer, or
  • Living in a remote area, as defined in the Election Act

So, if you’re away during the election you can still vote. What you’ll need to do is head over to the Elections Alberta website sometime before 6 pm on Monday, April 8 and request a special ballot.

You’ll need to make sure that you fill it out and send it back in time for the election for it to be counted.

More info about voting by special ballot is available here.

General voting

Voting locations will be open from 9 am to 8 pm on Voting Day — Tuesday, April 16. Voters must vote at their designated voting station on that day.

Remember, to be eligible to vote must be:

“Ordinary Residence” is described by Elections Alberta as:

  1. A person can have only one place of ordinary residence;
  2. A person’s ordinary residence is the place where the person lives and sleeps and to which, when the person is absent from it, the person intends to return; and,
  3. When a person leaves Alberta with the intention of becoming ordinarily resident outside Alberta, the person’s ordinary residence in Alberta ceases.

Before you vote you must sign a statement that you are eligible to vote. It is an offence to sign a false statement.
