
It’s definitely that time of year again: The sun is out and shining, leaving you with no excuse not to get out there and enjoy all the hikes that Calgary has to offer.
Check out these six hikes that are within about an hour or so from Calgary, because let’s face it, near or far, this area has some unbelievable nature on offer.

Mount Yamnuska Trail

About an hour away from Downtown Calgary lies the Mount Yamnuska hike. It’s definitely one of the more difficult hikes you’ll find on this list, but also affords you a stunning view of the valley below.
Distance: 7 km, 3 to 4 hours
Grotto Canyon

Though it may be more known as a winter hike, Grotto Canyon offers a trail during the summer that has many waterfalls and small ponds to stop and take pictures at. The hike is quite steep and we recommend being as prepared as possible when heading in, as the hike is only accessible by foot.

Big Hill Springs Trail

Just 40 minutes outside of the city, Big Hill Springs is an easier mid-day hike for the novice hiker. With only a small incline, the hike is pretty flat throughout the way and boasts a beautiful waterfall.

Paskapoo Slopes

Just a short 17-minute drive outside of Downtown Calgary is the Paskapoo Slopes. The Slopes are an easier, more relaxed hike that gives visitors the chance to explore Calgary’s nearby wilderness.

Mount Lorette Ponds

Located just under an hour away, Mount Lorette Ponds offers a variety of trails that snake through the forest to small bodies of water. Be careful not to feed the fish in the pond as they can become dependent on an exterior food source very quickly.

Elbow Falls

Elbow Falls lies nestled on Elbow River. The long river allows hikers to get in a short hike starting from the Elbow River Launch directly to the falls. The trails in the area allow for hikers to also veer off the beaten path and explore the new areas.
