If you’re considering a new career, check out some of Alberta’s highest in-demand jobs.
Finding your career path can sometimes feel a little overwhelming, especially if there seem to be few vacancies in that field. Thankfully, the provincial government keeps track of which industries are looking to expand their workforce.
Every couple of years, the Alberta government publishes a short-term employment forecast that outlines projected labour market imbalances over the next three years.
This forecast, combined with other economic and labour market data, helps employers and industries develop strategic workforce plans and supports educational institutions in developing programs that are more responsive to labour market demands.
For 2024-2026, the province identified these sectors as experiencing labour shortages:
- Technical trades and transportation officers, and controllers
- Helpers and labourers, and other transport drivers, operators and labourers
- Nurse aides, orderlies, patient service associates, registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses
According to the report, 45 per cent of occupations in Alberta are expected to experience notable or mild labour shortages.
Occupations experiencing mild or notable labour surpluses include positions in sales and service, retail and customer service. Other surpluses have been notedĀ in food-related occupations, such as cooks, butchers and bakers, as well as in finance-related occupations, including insurance agents and brokers and financial sales representatives.

So, there you have it! If you’re looking to secure a new job, pick something in hot demand and make that career move you’ll thrive in.
