Fun (and mostly outdoor) summer date ideas to try out this year

Sometimes you just have to switch it up.

Especially during a pandemic.

And while a standard dinner (patio) date is the typical go-to, this is your chance to reinvent date night and maybe even try something new. To make the decision process that much easier, we’ve rounded up a few summertime fun ideas for your next date.

Go for a hike

Canada is a country of many hiking trails. From trails in the city, to some a short drive away, hiking is not only a great way to spend the day outdoors, it’s also good for you. Be sure to dress appropriately (especially footwear), and bring your reusable bottle of water filled up for your journey.

Rent bikes/go for a bike ride

Bike riding, like hiking, is an awesome way to explore your city while getting some physical activity. Whether you are renting the bikes, or grabbing your own bike, be prepared for your adventure. Check out our list of every biking accessory you need to improve your summertime cycling.

Go stargazing

An incredibly rare comet, called the NEOWISE comet was captured above Canada in July. And while it may have been a less-than-common event, the stars in the sky are there almost every night. Learn about the Big Dipper and check out the weather before heading out. Grab a blanket, some snacks, and perhaps binoculars and telescopes if you have them. Get ready to get lost in the magic.

Try a new restaurant

This may not sound that exciting, but just like the magic in the stars, food has its own magic. From a variety of diverse dishes to desserts, most Canadian cities are packed with local, hidden gems when it comes to restaurants and bars. And with most places delivering these days, plan to try out a new restaurant, or take it out for a picnic to make this an outdoor experience.

Plan a picnic

The picnic is one of the best summer events to plan. And no picnic is complete without the basket that carries it all together. This can contain your take out, or your prepared snacks. Be sure to bring a blanket, reusable utensils, bug spray, sporting equipment/games, and your cooler packed with cold drinks.

Check out a farmer’s market

Plan for your weekend brunch, or dinner, by heading to a local farmer’s market. Many safety restrictions are in place, so give yourselves time to grab the ingredients to your next meal together. Don’t forget your reusable bags, and maybe look up recipes in a cookbook or two before planning your trip to the market.

Go for an outdoor workout

Grab your partner and head outside for a workout date. Outdoor workouts can add sunshine to your day, giving you some Vitamin D during your exercise routine. Plus, the best part about exercising outside is the change of scenery. Whether you choose to go for a run, or grab your yoga mats for some yoga, you will feel accomplished and get to spend time together.

Watch the sunset

The best thing about watching the sunset is it can be done in addition to any of the daytime activities like hiking, biking, or going on a picnic. Make sure to set your time for at least an hour before sunset. Find a spot facing west, whether in a park or by a beach, and be amazed at all the colours of the sky as the sun begins to set. Is there anything more romantic?
