
With fall right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to pick up a new hobby or skill, and luckily the Calgary Public Library offers a ton of free courses to do just that.
Whether you’re looking to try something new or sharpen a skill you already have, the library offers interactive, instructor-led courses that run for six weeks, and you only need a library card to access them.
Here are just a few of the free courses you can access at the Calgary Public Library this fall.
Secrets of Better Photography

If you have a camera laying around, this course goes over everything you need to know about it, like lighting, motion, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings. You will also explore common photography topics, including portraiture, children’s photography, pet photography, and digital editing.
Beginning Writer’s Workshop
In this course, you’ll write your own creative piece while learning literary techniques, peer-reviewing a classmate’s work, and receiving constructive criticism on your work. It also covers how to move your work from the prewriting stage to editing and final revision.
Start Your Own Small Business

This course covers everything you need to know about starting a business, like picking the right opportunity, how to develop proven marketing techniques, traditional and nontraditional financing options, and easy-to-implement employee-management procedures.

Accounting Fundamentals
Accounting fundamentals go over everything from writing checks to preparing an income statement and closing out accounts at the end of each fiscal period. It’s the perfect course for people who want to understand business finances or simply want to learn accounting basics.
Introduction to Journaling

This course covers the different types of journaling and many journaling techniques, exercises, tools and resources. You’ll learn a seven-step process to help you get started with journaling, as well as instructions on developing, decorating, and customizing your journal. As for journal content, you will discover how to use your journal to explore your thoughts, feelings, values, and to support your emotional well-being.
