When one door closes, another opens, and that’s certainly true for Calgary’s restaurant scene. Case in point: a well-known Italian restaurant is set to close this week, and we already have the details on what’s coming next.

Franca’s, the Edmonton Trail spot which has been open for over 20 years, will be closing soon, with its final dinner service set to take place on Saturday, May 30.

While the spot opened in 2002, it was recently taken over by new owners, Jennifer and John Banister.

“We were honoured to live in the world of Franca’s, even if just for a short time,” the Banisters said.

“We also have loved sharing in your special occasions, holidays, and memory-making. Thank you for making this time so very special.”

While many will be sad to see Franca’s go, the owners also shared the exciting news that the space would very soon be home to a brand-new restaurant, Petalo.

Petalo, which means petal in Italian, will be featuring “fresh, light, vibrant” contemporary Italian cuisine, with influences from the Mediterranean.

As well as a new menu, the former Franca space will be transformed with new textiles, greenery, lighting, and a brand-new bar with seating.

Petalo is slated to open mid-June, so there’s not too long to wait.
