The Rasmus Andersson era has reportedly come to an end for the Calgary Flames.
After over a year of speculation, the Flames traded the 29-year-old defenceman to the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday afternoon. This comes after trade talks reportedly intensified over the last week.
The Flames retained 50 per cent of Andersson’s $4.55 million cap hit and received defenceman Zach Whitecloud, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2027 conditional second-round pick, and defensive prospect Abram Weibe in return.

Andersson was initially picked 53rd overall by the Flames back in 2015 and has spent his entire NHL career in Calgary. He will end his Flames tenure with 57 goals and 261 points over the course of 584 games.
Whitecloud is the big piece coming back to the Flames in the trade. The 29-year-old defender won a Stanley Cup with Vegas back in 2023 and carries a $2.75 million cap hit that runs through the next two seasons. He currently has two goals and seven points through 47 games this season.
The conditional second-round pick also has a chance to become a first-rounder if the Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup this season.
The Swedish defender had 10 goals and 30 points in 48 games this season, which was third on the Flames in scoring. Luckily, Andersson did have a chance to say goodbye to both his teammates and Calgary fans after a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday.

There is no extension for Andersson as part of this deal, meaning that he could still become a free agent at the end of the season.
This isn’t the first time that the Flames have traded a top defenceman to Vegas. Back in 2024, Calgary shipped Noah Hanifin off to the Golden Knights in a three-way deal with the Philadelphia Flyers.
