The Calgary Flames may be near the bottom of the NHL standings, but they might lead the league in personality.
A large part of that is because of backup goalie Devin Cooley, who has quickly become one of the best quotes in the entire NHL. The California native has gone viral on several occasions for his interesting outlook on life and hockey.
Cooley was at it again on Saturday night following a 3-2 shootout victory over the Dallas Stars. In an interview with Scott Oake, the 28-year-old goaltender seemed to carry the excitement of a little kid after picking up the win, and even called Oake ‘dude’ in the middle of his answer.
“Yeah, man, I feel awesome. That was so much fun. It was such a blast, dude,” said a smiling Cooley.

The interview only got better, as Cooley told the veteran Hockey Night in Canada reporter that he was hoping the game would get to the shootout. He saw this as a moment of redemption after losing his last shootout this season.
Though things didn’t start as he hoped, before eventually getting the victory.
“Last shootout I got lit up and they scored two goals on two shots,” Cooley said. “I told [Dustin Wolf], ‘It’s redemption, I feel it in my bones,’ and then they scored on the first shot, and I was like, ‘Oh no man,’ but it was great, I’m really glad we got the win.
“It’s gonna be hard to sleep tonight for sure.”
Oake then asked about Cooley’s mantra of “nothing matters, nobody cares, we’re all gonna die” and the role it played in the tense game. The Flames goalie said that he was repeating that in his head for the entire third period.
Anything that helps an NHL goalie stay on his game.
“Especially in the third period when they scored two goals,” Cooley said. “I was just saying that over and over again just to keep myself very level headed, and then as soon as we won, then it was like okay, let all the emotions out and then enjoy it.”

Cooley seems to have brought over his warm California sensibilities to chilly Calgary this season, and nobody is complaining about it.
