The NHL has suspended Mikko Rantanen one game after a brutal hit from behind against Calgary Flames young star Matt Coronato.
Coronato was forced to leave the game for a while after the play, suffering from some nasty cuts to his nose. It was a gnarly-looking hit and one that could have caused a serious injury, but luckily, the 23-year-old was eventually able to return to action.
Rantanen was handed a five-minute major penalty on the play and game misconduct. He also received a fighting major after dropping the gloves with Jonathan Huberdeau.

The NHL Department of Player Safety (DoPS) announced the suspension on Sunday morning, which will force the 29-year-old Finn to miss Tuesday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.
In a statement, the DoPS said that this was an automatic suspension for Rantanen after he incurred two game misconduct penalties without playing in 41 consecutive regular-season games between the two.

This is Rantanen’s first-ever suspension in his 11-year NHL career.
It was the second time in under a week that the Dallas Stars superstar had received a major penalty for a questionable hit. Rantanen escaped suspension after boarding New York Islanders defenceman Alexander Romanov last week. That will not be the case this time around.
That hit sparked a fiery exchange with Islanders head coach Patrick Roy.

The Flames ultimately won the game 3-2 in a shootout over the Dallas Stars. It was a victory that vaulted them out of last place in the NHL above the Nashville Predators. Although with rookie Sam Honzek out long-term with an injury, the last thing the Flames want to see is another young player like Coronato getting sidelined.
