Nothing matters. Nobody cares. We’re all going to die. Many hockey fans remember this unusual saying coming from Devin Cooley when he was a member of the San Jose Sharks.
Now a member of the Calgary Flames, Cooley remains somewhat of a quirky character, but also a beloved one. The 28-year-old, who beat out Ivan Prosvetov for the back-up spot in training camp, picked up his first win of the season Wednesday night in a 6-2 defeat of the Buffalo Sabres.
Cooley continued what’s been an impressive season for him thus far, kicking aside 28 of the 30 shots he faced in the win. While his performance was notable, it was his hilarious postgame quotes that really generated a buzz.
“I thought our team did a really good job of protecting the middle ice,” Cooley said. “A lot of the shots came from the outside, which makes my job a lot easier. Our team was just so good tonight. I thought probably our best game of the year.”
While Flames fans were certainly loving that positivity coming from the rookie goalie, it was his quote shortly after that that had everybody talking. It came when asked what his reaction was when seeing his team put as many goals on the board as they did on Wednesday night.
“You really have to ground yourself,” Cooley said.
“I just go, ‘Nothing matters. Nobody cares. We’re all going to die.’
“I just say that over and over and over again.
“That way, I don’t get too excited. As soon as I start getting too excited, I’m like, ‘This could be it, this could be the win, we’re playing really well.’ I’ll start doing stupid stuff, and then I’ll give up dumb goals because I’m being stupid. If I just keep repeating those words over and over again, it just grounds me. I can just stay in the moment and not get too excited.”

This isn’t the only unusual thing Cooley does to help himself perform at his best, either. Earlier this season, cameras got him warming up in the tunnel with a VR headset.

Cooley certainly has some unique methods, but one can’t argue the results. Through six appearances this season, Cooley owns an outstanding 1.80 GAA and a .935 SV%. He’s given this coaching staff everything he’s got, and may soon start to get rewarded with more starts, as Dustin Wolf has struggled at times this season.
