Popular Douglas Fir Trail in Calgary finally has an update on its closure

The Douglas Fir Trail in Calgary’s southwest has been off limits for nearly two years, and now we have an update on the project.
A section of the Douglas Fir Trail has been closed since November 2023, due to eroded trail conditions that made the trail unsafe, and it has yet to reopen.
In January of 2024, the city started a study to evaluate problems such as seepage, erosion, and damage along the trail. The affected section runs just north of 150 Wildwood Dr. SW to 48 Wildwood Dr. SW.

The study included drilling and geotechnical surveys and monitoring the slope, in order to find the best long-term solution.
Initially, the trial was supposed to be wrapped up by Q1 of 2025, but it has stretched well past that deadline. According to an update from the city to Daily Hive, all fieldwork, including drilling, slope monitoring, and surveys, has been completed, and they expect to receive the full study report by the end of Q3 (September).

As of August 2025, the City of Calgary is finalizing deals with the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway (CPKCR), as part of the work that needs to be done is on land that the CPKCR owns. Once those approvals are secured, construction can finally begin.
For public safety, the trail will remain closed until all repairs are finished.
While no exact reopening date has been officially announced, the city plans to use its findings to plan solutions and pursue funding for the necessary repairs.
