Calgary police use AI to try and identify man found dead near Bow River
Calgary police are turning to the aid of AI in the hopes of identifying the body of a man who was found dead along the Bow River last year.
The Calgary Police Service (CPS) released the photo of the man, who was found dead in March 2024, in an attempt to locate the next of kin.
The man’s body was located by a passerby at approximately 11:10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, on the riverbank near the area of Memorial Drive NW and 10th Street NW.
Following an autopsy completed on Thursday, March 7, 2024, by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the death was deemed not suspicious.
“A composite sketch of the man was released to the public in May 2024; however, the man remains unidentified. All other traditional methods of identifying the man have also been unsuccessful,” CPS noted in a news release.
Investigators are now switching to a modern-day tool in the hopes of identifying the man, with police releasing an AI-generated image Friday morning.

The man is believed to have been between 55 and 70 years old at the time of his death, 6’ tall, approximately 230 pounds, with a light skin tone, blonde or grey hair, blue eyes and some facial hair. The man was also wearing a pair of brown hiking boots with orange and black soles at the time he was located.
“While we make every effort to ensure that next of kin notifications happen in private settings, we also recognize the immense grief that comes with unanswered questions. Our commitment is to help families find the answers they deserve,” police added.
