Calgary's getting an illuminated live drive-in dance show this week

Mar 16 2021, 6:46 pm

Decidedly Jazz Danceworks is bringing a live dance show to Calgary from March 18 to 20, drive-in style.

Audience members will park in the lot directly across from the Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (DJD) building, where dancers will be performing from behind windows on the second-floor breezeway, illuminated by multi-coloured lights.

The dance piece, “There is Something in the Details,” was choreographed by DJD co-founder Michèle Moss and the seven dancers who will perform it. The piece was designed to be short and site-specific to accommodate for our world’s current circumstances.

“The world does seem off-kilter, my mind crowded and current affairs amazingly discombobulating,” says Moss. “Yes, that’s the word, and I’ll run with that.”

“Make no mistake it was hard; hard to focus amid the chaos, dancers cannot touch each other and have to wear masks… we will be looking at you, looking at us, looking at you – you know, bamboozling and bewildering are the words of the hour!”

The audience can tune in to the performance’s accompanying music on 104.7 FM to have the show broadcast right through their car radio. Binoculars, blankets, and snacks are suggested to maximize comfort and fun during the viewing experience.

There are two 30-minute shows each evening, at 8:30 and 9:30 pm, and those interested are asked to RSVP for this free performance. Parking spots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

Moss asks the audience to leave behind any toxicity or troubles for 30 minutes. “Take deep breaths just like the dancers will do and feel the connection. Bop your head, oh and don’t forget to bring some drive-in dance show snacks!”
