It’s shaping up to be a snow-covered May long weekend for some areas of Alberta, and Calgary is at risk of seeing some accumulations.
A special weather statement was issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) late Thursday afternoon and was carried over into today, warning that snowfall may affect travel plans this long weekend.
ECCC says that along the Alberta Foothills and near Jasper National Park, snow will begin tonight or Saturday. Snow may affect areas as far east as Calgary on Saturday morning, with the heaviest snow forecast to fall on Saturday.
Forecast snowfall amounts at this time are highly uncertain; however, accumulations of up to 20 centimetres are possible over higher terrain and along the Trans-Canada Highway west of Calgary.
Looking at the seven-day forecast for Calgary, the risk of wet snow and flurries pops up on Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17. Rain is expected to begin after midnight tonight, with rain changing to wet snow in the morning. Rainfall amounts are currently being pegged at 5 millimetres, with snowfall amounts possibly more than 5 centimetres.
