It’s shaping up to be a snow-covered May long weekend for some areas of Alberta, and Calgary is at risk of seeing some accumulations.
A special weather statement was issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) late Thursday afternoon, warning that snowfall may affect travel plans this long weekend.
ECCC says that snow will start in the mountain parks and the Alberta Foothills tonight or Saturday. Snow may affect areas as far east as Calgary on Saturday morning. The heaviest snow will fall on Saturday, but snow will continue near the mountains for much of the weekend.
Forecast snowfall amounts at this time are highly uncertain; however, accumulations of up to 20 centimetres are possible over higher terrain and along the Trans-Canada Highway west of Calgary.
Looking at the seven-day forecast for Calgary, the risk of snow and flurries pops up on Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17. Rain is expected to begin after midnight tomorrow, then change to wet snow before Saturday morning.
