A rare moment was captured on video near Kananaskis after a hiker caught a group of grizzly bears roaming along the road.

Rocco Rennie and a friend were heading into the mountains for a hike when they came across the bears along Highway 40.

“We got up and went hiking and came across the bears on Highway 40, a few kilometres before our turn onto Highway 742,” Rennie said when speaking with Daily Hive.

“I was so excited because I’d never seen a mama bear with three cubs together before.”

While filming the moment, Rennie captured one of the bears briefly standing up and walking on its hind legs, which later caught attention online after her friend posted the video to Reddit.

“Watching it stand up on its hind legs was such a surreal experience,” Rennie explained. “It was an incredibly cute moment, but also a little intimidating seeing such a powerful animal walk upright.”

The pair continued on their hike after the encounter, and when they returned, they found the bears being escorted by a vehicle.

Reddit users were quick to point out that these bears are known around the area and consist of a mother bear and three cubs.

Pretty sure I have footage of them in the Kananaskis staff accommodation parking lot when all those cubs were babies,” one user said. “I’ve got a video of this same crew. They’ve been together at least 3 or 4 seasons now,” another added.

Others pointed out just how rare and memorable the moment was: “This is incredible,” one user commented, while another added, “What a cool moment to capture. Thanks for sharing!”

According to Alberta Parks, visitors who encounter wildlife in the area should keep a safe distance, including at least 100 metres away from bears, and avoid approaching the animals.
