Sprawling $30M combined library and fire station in the works for Calgary

Construction is set to begin on the first combined fire station and library in Calgary this month, bringing library amenities and a permanent fire station to the southeast.
The Walden Fire Station and Library will be located at 969 Walden Dr. SE and feature a permanent two-bay fire station along with a new Calgary Public Library branch.
There is currently a temporary one-bay fire station on the site, which has been in use since 2020 and will remain open during construction. The new facility will serve the communities of Walden, Legacy, Chaparral, and surrounding areas.
The estimated project cost is $30.2 million and includes investment from the Province of Alberta. The fire station is set to span 13,569 sq. ft., while the library will be 10,000 sq. ft.
The City says the project will bring enhanced emergency services to the area, a new space for residents to learn and connect, and better value by bringing two important community services together under one roof.

The Walden Library will feature the same amenities as most other Calgary Public Libraries, including physical reading materials, desktop and laptop computers, public printing and internet access, meeting and study rooms, and a full slate of in-person programming and play opportunities.
The City says the location, which is already City-owned, was chosen to allow firefighters to respond to emergencies quickly and without obstacles.
“The Walden site meets these requirements, offering strong access for emergency response. In addition, the size and layout of the property create an opportunity to include Library services on the same site, allowing the community to benefit from multiple services in one convenient location,” the project’s website added.
While construction is set to open this month, the official opening of the new building is not anticipated until Q1 of 2028.
