Friendly Reminder: Calgary has an 19°C indoor beach to enjoy

While it might be true that landlocked Calgary may not have many beaches to lounge at even in the summer months, there is one place in the city where you can enjoy warm sand all year round.

The Beach YYC, Calgary’s (and Alberta’s) first and only indoor beach, officially opened its doors last September and has been offering Calgarians a warm, sandy respite from winter ever since.

The 13,000-sq-ft facility houses 800 tonnes of sand, is home to a picnic table area for spectators and a licensed cafe, and — most importantly — stays at a nice 18 to 19°C all year long.

There are also ceiling heaters that can be turned on to combat the -30°C temperatures of a Calgary winter, and insulation under the sand to keep your bare feet from getting too cool.

Given the current cold spell that the city is under, stripping down to a t-shirt and shorts for a game of beach volleyball sounds like the perfect escape — all while staying within the city limits of YYC.

The entire building can be rented out for parties, and there are drop-in and registered volleyball games available to join throughout the week.

The facility will be opening registration for its spring volleyball league on February 19, so if you and some friends want to get together for some summer exercise over the next few months, this could be your best bet. The first game of the season starts on April 8.

Those looking for a more relaxed visit to the indoor beach can sign up or drop in for games of ultimate frisbee, spikeball, soccer, dodgeball, yoga sessions, or pick-up games of volleyball. Just check The Beach YYC’s website for their monthly schedule of events and drop-in days.
