New 15,000 sq. ft. library in the works for northwest Calgary

Northwest Calgary is getting a new library and community hub, with construction underway on Symons Valley Centre.
In a July update, the City of Calgary said construction began in mid-June, with the site now cleared and prepared for construction. Excavation and foundation work are currently underway on the project’s second phase.
Phase two of the project includes the construction of a new 15,000 sq. ft. library to replace the temporary Sage Hill Library, which currently only spans 1,700 sq. ft.
Other parts of phase two include underground and surface parking for the library, a community commons green space, and a multimodal main street that will improve access throughout the site. Construction is set to continue through 2028.

The City of Calgary
The City says the new library and community space will primarily serve residents of Kincora, Sherwood, Sage Hill, Nolan Hill, and Evanston.
The Symons Valley Centre is being built in five phases on seven acres of City-owned land at 251 Sage Hill Blvd. NW. Phase one of the project was completed from 2025 to 2026 and included deep utility work across the seven-acre site.

The approved budget for phases one and two for the Symons Valley Centre is $43 million.
Phases three and four are also set to take place in 2026, with the City planning to sell one land parcel to a non-market housing provider and two additional parcels to private developers for mixed-use projects that will include retail services.
Finally, phase five, which the City says will take place beyond 2030, includes a Calgary Transit terminal with a Park and Ride area.
