Construction to begin on a major Calgary road this month with disruptions expected
Construction is getting underway on a major Calgary road as crews begin rebuilding and repaving Southland Drive SW.
The City of Calgary says reconstruction will begin this month between Oakmoor Way SW and Elbow Drive SW, with lane closures, traffic shifts, and other disruptions expected throughout the project.
Work will include the reconstruction of about two kilometres of roadway between Oakmoor Way SW and 14th Street SW, along with another 800 metres of repaving from 14th Street SW to Elbow Drive SW.

Preparation work, including site setup, was expected to start as early as Sept. 7, with the first phase of road reconstruction on westbound Southland Drive SW between 14th Street SW and Palliser Drive SW set to begin in mid-September.

Nighttime milling and paving is also getting underway in mid-September, with work expected to run from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. seven days a week through the end of the month.
The City says the project is part of its Annual Paving Program and will fix deteriorated pavement and concrete infrastructure to improve reliability and extend the lifespan of the road.
“Southland Drive SW roadway west of 14th Street SW is structurally deficient, and the full length of the roadway from Oakmoor Way SW to Elbow Drive SW is showing signs of wear, including cracking, rutting, and patching worsening in the intersections,” the City says.

In addition to the reconstruction and repaving, the city also plans to make geometric changes to five intersections along the corridor.
Drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users can expect some disruptions throughout the project, including lane and road closures, reduced speed limits, temporary detours, bus stop changes, and pedestrian detours.
