Construction underway on major Memorial Drive project and here's what to expect
Construction is officially underway on a major Calgary road project that will extend Memorial Drive farther east and improve connections across the city.
According to an August 2026 update from the City of Calgary, construction on the project began earlier this month.
As of April, the City was preparing final design plans and looking to hire a contractor for the project. Now, crews are working on the roadway and installing underground utilities along Memorial Drive between Abbeydale Drive NE and 68th Street NE.
The City says drivers and pedestrians can expect temporary traffic changes, sidewalk detours, parking restrictions, and transit stop relocations as the work continues through September.
The project includes a new overpass over Stoney Trail, with improved connections on Memorial Drive, designed to help improve traffic flow and efficiency for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

It will extend the road eastward from Abbeydale Drive over Stoney Trail and connect to 84 Street E. The new roadway will be designed as an urban boulevard, a roadway style that is more livable, functional, and accessible for all users.
Separate spaces will be provided for all modes of travel, including walking, wheeling, and vehicle traffic, to improve safety. The urban boulevard will also include a level at-grade crossing of the CN Rail tracks.

The City is planning to align construction on the Memorial Drive extension with another major infrastructure initiative, the Belvedere Feeder Main, which will see the installation of a new water feeder main along a similar route, to optimize resources and reduce disruptions in nearby communities.
The project was initially approved for $60 million in 2024, but the City has recommended an additional $45 million in funding. If approved, that would bring the total estimated cost of the project to $105 million.
