Amazon recently announced the short-list of cities that could become the home of their second headquarters, and, unfortunately, Calgary didn’t make the cut.
Even after promises of bear-fighting, gigantic banners, and an out-of-the box sidewalk chalk campaign, Calgary’s dreams of HQ2 have come to an end, with Toronto remaining the only Canadian city still holding onto a shot at the coveted, multi-billion dollar project.
The very idea of Amazon coming to Calgary was a contentious issue for many, with one side touting the (sorely needed) economic benefits the headquarters would bring, and the other side either seeing the pitch as hopeless or thinking that bringing the tech giant into CowTown would spell disaster.
A divide that is still evident following Amazon’s announcement on Thursday.
While it’s disappointing @amazon didn’t choose Calgary, Mary Moran and @calgaryeconomic should be proud of their pitch. We learned a lot for the next one, and the next 100 after that #ableg #yyc

LOL @ all the people that thought Calgary had a chance for Amazon HQ. What an incredible waste of time and taxpayer money. We will waste money on that while our snow clearing is absolutely pathetic. https://t.co/XHaKrJ5qru #yyc #yyccc

Hats off to ya Top20. Alexa, if anyone asks, Calgary would still fight a bear for you. #AmazonHQ2 kudos @calgaryeconomic @amazon pic.twitter.com/dipljg9HlV

Calgary is not on the short list for Amazon HQ2.
Let’s take care of our existing businesses first. If we do a good job with this, we will be a natural destination for investors.
Reduce taxes, remove the carbon tax, cut regulatory burdens. #yyc #ableg #yeg— Philip Schuman (@Philip4Glenmore) January 18, 2018
The important story of @calgaryeconomic’s Amazon bid is that, as always, #yyc came together & did great work. Props & gratitude to all involved.

Calgary is out on the Amazon HQ2 thing because our provincial government did not promise a tonne of taxpayer money to a profitable business, which is a good thing and proves the don’t screw up absolutely everything they do. #ableg

I mean it took a lot of leaps of logic to think Amazon was really going to set up an actual HQ in Calgary, the city of the car and cowboys.
So yes, of course it’s was going to be Toronto, a city that’s progressive with good transit links. And East, not West.

Wait people really thought Calgary ever had a shot at HQ2? Amazon isn’t putting a second HQ in a Canadian city that’s right next to the 1st one. American south is most likely.

The Big decision from Amazon just came thru :Calgary is NOT on the short list for it’s next headquarters! This is a great learning outcome for our city , our municipal and provincial government need to jump and start open the door to more talent to come here! pic.twitter.com/OLdkzWteYs

And with that, the rivalry between Calgary and Montgomery County, Maryland steps up a notch.

But hey, we’ve still got that fulfillment centre in Balzac!
