Massive 162,000 sq. ft. athletic complex in the works in northeast Calgary
Northeast Calgary is getting a new place to play, with a massive 162,500 sq. ft. athletic complex in Saddle Ridge currently in the works.
Located at the northwest corner of 80th Avenue NE and Metis Trail NE, the Northeast Athletic Complex will be one of the largest athletic parks in Calgary.
It’s set to feature outdoor amenities such as four outdoor multi-use artificial turf fields and a competition-capable cricket field to host local, regional and national games, which will be the first of its kind in the city.

Inside will feature a competition-sized indoor artificial turf field, indoor cricket batting nets, 16 team rooms and four change rooms for officials, multi-purpose, media, administration and maintenance rooms, washrooms, and spectator seating.
The facility will also include over 500 parking spots and amenities such as pathways, green spaces, picnic areas, and a playground on the 35-acre space.
The project is currently in the design and permitting phase. According to the City’s website, funds for the project were allocated in the City’s 2026 budget, meaning the facility is fully funded for construction.

GEC Architecture was hired in the summer of 2025 to complete the design of the complex, and with the design process well underway, development permits have officially been submitted.
While no construction or opening date is currently set, the City is working to finalize the project schedule and is beginning the process of selecting a contractor to complete the build.
This is just one of many new developments on Calgary’s radar. Calgary YMCA and Calgary Public Library recently announced a 69,000 sq. ft recreation centre and library proposed for west Calgary, and two new high-rise apartments are in the works near CF Chinook Centre.
