A big milestone on a Memorial Drive extension project happens soon

The City of Calgary says plans to extend Memorial Drive into East Calgary are moving ahead, with final designs underway and construction anticipated to start soon.
According to an April 2026 project update, the City is currently preparing final plans and working to hire a contractor to complete the work on the extension, which will connect Memorial Drive with the community of Belvedere.
The project includes a new overpass over Stoney Trail and Rotary Mattamy Greenway, with improved connections on Memorial Drive, designed to help improve traffic flow and efficiency for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Construction is set to begin in the spring or summer of 2026. As a part of the latest update, the City also confirmed that noise barriers will be built along the north side of Memorial Drive, east of Abbeydale Drive NE, to help reduce traffic noise for nearby residents.
They plan to align construction times with another major infrastructure initiative, the Belvedere Feeder Main, to optimize resources and reduce disruptions in nearby communities.
The extension will be designed as an urban boulevard, a roadway style that is more livable, functional, and accessible for all users.

Separate spaces will be provided for all modes of travel, including walking, wheeling, and vehicle traffic facilities, as well as improving safety. The urban boulevard will also include a level at-grade crossing of the CN Rail tracks.
Construction is set to take place between 2026 and 2028, with an estimated cost of $70,000,000.
