Memorial Drive could see major construction with a HUGE extension eyed

The City of Calgary is considering a major infrastructure upgrade and preparing for plenty of construction with a proposed extension of Memorial Drive.
The extension would stretch Memorial Drive east, connecting the community of Belvedere and supporting the movement of people and goods in East Calgary.
The proposed project includes a new overpass over Stony Trail and Rotary Mattamy Greenway, with improved connections on Memorial Drive, designed to improve traffic flow and efficiency for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

According to an update from the City to Daily Hive, following the completion of the functional planning phase in December 2024, the project has moved into the detailed design phase, with the team focusing on refining the design of the bridges and roadway.
They plan to align construction times with another major infrastructure initiative, the Belvedere Feeder Main, to optimize resources and reduce disruptions in nearby communities.
The original construction plan involved two phases: a two-lane overpass over Stoney Trail, followed by a second two-lane structure at a later date. With additional funding secured, the project will now proceed as a single phase, a four-lane overpass that combines both phases into one design.
The Memorial Drive extension will be designed as an urban boulevard, a roadway style that is more livable, functional, and accessible for all users.
Separate spaces will be provided for all modes of travel, including walking, wheeling, and vehicle traffic facilities, as well as improving safety. The urban boulevard will also include a level at-grade crossing of the CN Rail tracks.

The detailed design phase is expected to be completed in early 2026, and construction is set to take place between Spring 2026 and 2028, with an estimated cost of $70,000,000.
Other design elements include reduced traffic speeds and improved integration with surrounding communities, by allowing businesses and homes to face the street.
Once complete, the extension is expected to provide a continuous route along Memorial Drive with upgraded intersections and overpass structures, supporting both local and regional traffic.
