Calgary could be in for some record-breaking November weather next week, with temperatures forecast to climb well above seasonal averages.
According to the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) forecast, temperatures could reach a high of 19°C on Nov. 11, challenging its Nov. 11 all-time temperature record of 19.4°C, which was set in 1894 at a former weather station in Calgary.
“Definitely seeing temperatures of 19°C is well above average for what we’re expecting for this time of year,” said Matt Alders, senior meteorologist with ECCC, when speaking with Daily Hive.
Typical daytime highs for this time of year are around 4°C, with overnight lows of 8°C. Alders gave some insight into what could be causing the unusually warm weather.
“We have what’s called a blocking pattern,” Alders explained. “It’s a pattern that steers our weather systems.”

He said the pattern is controlled by the jet stream, which is currently pushed far north, allowing warm air from the United States to move into Calgary and southern Alberta.
“That brings a lot of warm air from the United States up into Calgary and southern Alberta,” he said.
While temperatures this high in November are unusual, Alders said they are not unheard of. Calgary’s all-time November temperature record is 23.1°C, recorded on Nov. 2, 2020.
The above-average temperatures are expected to stick around through Nov. 14 and 15, before conditions begin returning closer to seasonal around Nov. 16. By Nov. 19, temperatures could be back around zero or slightly below.
