Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf is receiving plenty of kudos after being named a Calder Trophy finalist, though there’s one individual in particular whose congratulatory message stood out.

Wolf was named one of the three finalists for the Calder Trophy on Monday, an award given annually to the NHL’s best rookie. Also named alongside Wolf are San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini and Montreal Canadiens defenceman Lane Hutson.

The three finalists come as no surprise, as they led the way all year in Calder discussions. Who winds up winning the award remains to be seen, but all Flames fans are extremely proud of Wolf, including the mother of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, Jane.

“We still remember how highly Johnny spoke of you when you joined the Flames organization,” Jane wrote in part of her message to Wolf on X. “He would be so proud of you.”

Though Wolf and Gaudreau were never teammates, the two crossed paths on several occasions at Flames training camps over the years. It was clear that Gaudreau, who tragically passed away late last summer, had an impact on Wolf. The 23-year-old goaltender paid tribute to both Johnny and Matthew on a mask he wore this past season.

“Thank you!” Wolf wrote back to Jane. “I know John and Matt were looking down on our season from the very start.”

Wolf is the first Flame nominated for the Calder since Gaudreau, who was up for the award in 2015. He ended up finishing in third place, with Mark Stone coming in second and Aaron Ekblad taking home the award.
