Construction on the future home of the Calgary Flames is continuing to come together at a very quick pace.
The digging to put together Scotia Place began in the summer of 2024, with the hope being that the new building would be ready for action to kick off the 2027-28 season. That timeline remains intact as of now, thanks to some great work from CANA Construction.
“We’ve had a busy Flames offseason on site here,” said construction manager Stuart Kohnen. “The excavation is now complete with 308,000 cubic metres of dirt removed from the site. Our concrete continues to progress. We’re about 50 per cent of the way through that, with the main concourse and mezzanine slabs ongoing. As you can see behind me, the structural steel has now commenced.”

This new building, which will feature several exciting amenities such as a two-storey bar, an underground community arena, flex washrooms, and several dining areas around the perimeter of the arena.
“This project contains approximately 9,000 metric tonnes of structural steel,” Kohnen said. “For an easy comparison, that’s about 1,500 more than the Eiffel Tower.”
Those who have driven past the construction site in recent weeks will have noticed some massive changes, as plenty of the building has risen above ground. While there is still plenty of work to be done, it appears as though there is plenty of optimism that this project will be completed by the original timeline given.
Once Scotia Place is ready to go, the Flames will depart from the Saddledome, the building which the organization has called home since 1983. The Saddledome, which has become a truly iconic structure in Calgary, is expected to be scheduled for demolition a short time later.
“I think for myself and everyone else involved in the project, it’s exciting to be a part of such a monumental project in the city of Calgary,” Kohnen continued. “Personally, being a Calgary Flames fan, it’s a little extra important to myself. I know everyone is really proud of what we’re ultimately building at the end of the day.”
