Calgary Flames have lost three players in free agency so far

The Calgary Flames have had a much quieter start to free agency than many of their fans had anticipated heading in.

While the Flames weren’t expected to take any sort of big swings, their surplus of cap space had most expecting they would bring in some mid-tier free agents to help fill some holes. So far, that hasn’t been the case.

To this point, the Flames have landed goaltender Ivan Prosvetov, who is expected to battle Devin Cooley for the backup position behind Dustin Wolf next season. They’ve also signed defenceman Nick Cicek to a one-year, two-way deal.

While it’s been a quiet time for the Flames in regards to bringing in former players, they have seen three depart their organization in favour of other teams.

The current list of departures is:

  • Forward Anthony Mantha, Pittsburgh Penguins, one-year deal, $2.5 million
  • Defenceman Jonathan Aspirot, Boston Bruins, one-year, two-way deal, $775,000
  • Goaltender Dan Vladar, Philadelphia Flyers, two years, $6.7 million

There are now just two remaining UFAs from the Flames roster last season in Kevin Rooney and Tyson Barrie. Rooney could wind up finding a home elsewhere for a team looking for centre depth, though this could be the end of the road for Barrie, who wound up spending part of the 2024-25 season in the AHL.

The Flames also have two remaining RFAs: Connor Zary and Morgan Frost. There is little to no risk of an offer sheet on either, as the Flames have a boatload of cap space to match any offer thrown their way. Once signed, Frost is likely to return on a short-term deal, while the jury is still out on whether or not the Flames will go long term with Zary, who suffered two serious knee injuries last season.
