Calgary Flames haven't ruled out re-signing Blake Coleman: report

It isn’t a forgone conclusion that the Calgary Flames are going to trade Blake Coleman.

Despite selling off the vast majority of their veterans in what is a clear rebuild, the Flames elected to hold onto Coleman past the 2026 trade deadline.

The 34-year-old, who has just one season remaining on his deal, is expected by most to be moved, whether it be this summer or before next year’s trade deadline. Based on some new reporting, however, that may not be the case.

In his most recent piece at The Athletic, Pierre LeBrun made it clear that if the Flames do move on from Coleman, it won’t be in exchange for draft picks, given the large amount they already have. Instead, they would prefer to make a trade for another player(s) who could help their roster.

“If there’s a hockey trade that makes sense, they would look at that,” LeBrun wrote.

Given the Flames’ timeline, trading Coleman would make plenty of sense, though management isn’t simply going to part ways with him if they don’t like the offers they receive. If that situation were to unfold, it sounds as though the organization is open to an extension.

“If a trade doesn’t materialize, though, the Flames would also be open to talks of an extension with Coleman,” LeBrun said.

Coleman has spent the past five seasons with the Flames, serving as a solid middle-six forward who has provided strong two-way play on the ice and excellent leadership away from it. Injuries limited him to 69 games in 2025-26, where he finished with 20 goals and 35 points.

One thing we know for certain is that the Flames have more than enough cap space to get an extension done. They have just under $23 million in cap space and only four players on expiring deals: Ryan Lomberg, Jake Bean, Victor Olofsson, and John Beecher.
