The Calgary Flames Foundation and Siksika Health Services are teaming up to build what will become the only outdoor rink in Siksika Nation.

What will the name of the new ice surface be? The Calgary Flames Outdoor Rink, of course.

Currently, the nearest rinks are up to an hour’s drive off of the reservation. The Calgary Flames Outdoor Rink will serve a population of over 4,000 people, with six schools in the area.

“Providing opportunities for communities and people to play is a priority for the Calgary Flames Foundation,” says Candice Goudie, executive director of the Calgary Flames Foundation.

“We are thrilled to work with Siksika Nation on this project that will bring an outdoor rink and so much more to the community.”

Siksika Health Services’ relationship with the Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation has resulted in programming and events such as the “Every Child Matters” Hitmen Game.

The mandate of the Calgary Flames Foundation is to improve the lives of southern Albertans through support of health and wellness, education and grassroots sports programs. This includes projects like renovating, refurbishing, or building outdoor rinks such as this one.

“On behalf of Siksika Nation, I would like to extend a special Thank You to the Calgary Flames Foundation for their generous contribution,” says Nioksskaistamik, Chief Ouray Crowfoot of Siksika Nation.

“Siksika has many young athletes who love participating in sports, but often don’t have the means or opportunities to do so. We look forward to developing more collaborative efforts on a go-forward basis and continuing our excellent working relationship,”

Construction of the rink is scheduled for this spring and summer, with plans to open next winter in late 2021 or early 2022.
