It’s hard to believe that it’s already been one year since construction on the Calgary Flames’ new arena got underway.

After finally getting an agreement in place with the City, shovels hit the ground to start building Scotia Place on July 22, 2024. One year later, the hard-working crews have made some incredible progress on the state-of-the-art facility. Here’s a look at a few of the milestones made thus far on the new building, as provided by the City of Calgary:

  • 308,000 cubic metres of dirt and materials have been removed from the site
  • 8,200 cubic metres of concrete have been poured to date
  • 200+ workers have been on-site daily
  • 770 metric tonnes of structural steel already on-site
  • 50+ of the concrete support columns have been poured

A drive past the construction site, located right across the street from the Saddledome, also shows fans just how far things will come. What was nothing more than a hole in the ground months ago suddenly looks like the renderings of a massive and luxurious new building.

There is still a ton of work to be done, however, as Scotia Place isn’t expected to be ready until the 2027-28 season. That means that two seasons remain for the Saddledome, which has served as the home of the Flames since 1983.

The new arena will serve as a much-needed upgrade and will have several unique features, including a two-story bar, an underground community arena, flex washrooms, quiet rooms, and much more.

Though it’s hard to be patient for something this exciting, Flames fans should be confident that this new arena will be well worth the wait.
