Small and medium Calgary employers are getting some national recognition, as 10 local companies have been named among the top in Canada.

This list comes from Canada’s Top Small & Medium Employers, an annual editorial competition that recognizes small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

“Canada’s SME sector is tremendously important to the nation and is responsible for over two-thirds of the country’s private-sector employment.”

The employers are evaluated using eight criteria: workplace, work atmosphere, benefits, vacation and time off, employee communications, performance management, training, and community involvement.

BluEarth Renewables Inc. secured a spot on the list thanks to its new personal care program, which provides employees with five flex days that can be used for personal appointments, religious observance, or to pursue personal interests.

Burnet, Duckworth & Palmer LLP also found itself on the list, being touted for supporting its summer articling students with a $5,000 tuition bonus at the start of their third year of law school. It also landed on a list of Alberta’s top employers for 2026.

The next Calgary company on the list is Caltrax Inc., mentioning its increase in full-time workforce by over 27 per cent in the past year and lets everyone share in the company’s success through profit-sharing and year-end bonuses.

Integrated Sustainability Consultants Ltd. was recognized for its Freedom Fridays program, enabling employees to take Fridays off before long weekends as well as every other Friday during the summer.

Mawer Investment Management Ltd. secured its spot by encouraging employees to make a difference in their local communities with unlimited paid days off to volunteer.

Obsidian Energy Ltd. was recognized for encouraging employees to adopt an ownership mentality through a share purchase plan available to all employees.

Two other companies on the list include Olympia Financial Group Inc. and PrairieSky Royalty Ltd. Olympia Financial Group Inc. was included for its maternity and parental leave top-up, ranging from eight to 17 weeks, as well as on-site child care at its head office.

PrairieSky Royalty Ltd. was praised for its dedicated coverage for mental health practitioners as part of its benefits plan, to a maximum of $1,500 per year.

Last but not least, Sabre Ltd. and Zeno Renewables rounded out the Calgary companies on the list. Sabre Ltd. was noted for its employee development with a range of in-house training initiatives, from paid internships and apprenticeships to formal mentoring and leadership development programs.
