Construction underway on a major Calgary road improvement project

Construction is underway on a major Calgary improvement project, with work beginning along 26th Avenue SW.
The project is set to bring upgrades to 26th Avenue SW between 37th Street and 14th Street SW. According to the City’s website, the goal of the project is to make the busy street safer and more comfortable for people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving.
The first phase of upgrades began the week of Aug. 10, with crews working on sidewalk, transit stop, and streetlight upgrades along the south side of 26th Avenue SW between 25th and 26th Street SW. Once complete, work will move to the north side.
Following that, crews will repave the roadway and install bike lane medians. The first phase is expected to take approximately five to six weeks.

Underground utility work is expected to begin in late August along 26th Avenue SW, between just west of 18th Street SW and 16th Street SW. The work will include water main replacements and stormwater system upgrades and is expected to take approximately 10 to 14 days.
The larger project will be completed in several phases, with construction taking place along different sections of the road.

Construction is expected to continue through 2026 and 2027, with the project scheduled to be completed in 2028.
On the west side of the road, five phases of mobility upgrades are planned between 25th Street SW and 38th Street SW, while another five phases will take place between 14th Street SW and 22nd Street SW.
The City says key improvements include protected bike lanes and multi‑use pathways, upgraded intersections, new floating bus stops, a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h, and improved street lighting.
