Lengthy Calgary construction project finally nearly completed after four years

Construction on a major Calgary road project that has been underway for the past four years is finally nearing completion.

According to an August update from the City of Calgary, work on the Bridgeland Main Street project is continuing along 1st Avenue NE, with construction expected to wrap up by the end of Summer 2026.

The project began construction in 2022, with phase one along Edmonton Trail NE, which was completed in Fall 2023.

Phase two of the project involves work along 1 Avenue NE from 4th Street to 11th Street, and along 2nd Avenue NE between 6th Street NE and 10th Street NE, with construction continuing through this year.

This summer, crews are completing work on the north side of 1 Avenue N.E. between 4 Street and 6A Street N.E. The work includes widening sidewalks, upgrading street lighting, installing new street furniture, and adding trees and landscaping.

While construction wraps up, Calgarians can still expect construction to occur Monday to Saturday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., with occasional weekend or overnight work if needed.

The City says during construction, residents and visitors can expect traffic detours and lane closures, pathway and sidewalk closures, temporary parking changes, increased noise, dust, and construction vehicles, as well as temporary business access detours; however, businesses remain open during construction.

According to the City, the key features of the street improvements are: prioritizing pedestrian safety, enhanced landscaping for pedestrian comfort, unique streetscape elements, new opportunities for community gathering, and improved mobility options

While construction is set to be done soon, some minor finishing work and landscaping could continue into September.

The construction in Bridgeland hasn’t been all smooth sailing. Back in 2025, a local business owner says they were told to refrain from posting about frustrations and concerns caused by the construction outside their building.
