Winter in Calgary really isn’t all that bad.
Sure, the temperature sits stubbornly below freezing and yeah, it takes a few extra minutes in the morning to put on the extra layer or three of clothing, but there are also quite a few positives that come alongside the frostiest of seasons.
Namely, our lakes, ponds, and lagoons freeze over to create some picture-perfect outdoor rinks.

Mix the stunning sheet of ice with Calgary’s uncanny ability to see more sunshine than anywhere else in the country, and you’ve got the makings for one seriously special day.

Not the best on bladed boots? No worries — there’s also a curling sheet at the park for those looking to keep things a little less wobbly.
And so what if it’s a little cold out? just slap on some mittens and a scarf, keep your body moving, and maybe bring your trusty thermos along for the ride if you’re feeling so inclined. There’s also a fire pit on site if you need a real warm-up.
Here’s a look at all the fun being had at Bowness Park this winter, and an idea of all the good times still to come.
Bowness Park is open from 5 am to 11 pm, and the skate shop is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 8 pm (weather permitting). Skate rentals cost $10.
