Alberta is headed into a stretch of messy winter weather, but what that looks like will depend on where you live, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).
Northern and central portions of the province, including Edmonton, have some cold days in their forecast. Justin Shelley, a meteorologist from ECCC, says that’s because a surge of arctic air has pushed down into the province.
“It’s currently centred over the Northwest Territories, but that axis is shifted all the way south through the central and northern prairies,” Shelley said when speaking with Daily Hive.
As for snowfall, Shelley says the west central and northern regions of Alberta will see the brunt of the winter weather, with anywhere from 10 to 15 cm of snow expected over the course of the next three to four days.
The winter weather isn’t stopping there. Temperatures will also split across the province, with central regions, including the Edmonton area, dipping into the low minus teens and sitting in those temperatures well into the weekend.

On the other hand, southern Alberta, including the Calgary area, will see a brief cold snap over the next couple of days, before a warm-up on Sunday. “Generally speaking, a bit warmer in the southern half of the province compared to the north.”
Looking toward early next week, a fresh weather system is set to bring even more snow and cold for northern and central areas of the province, while areas in the south will enjoy some milder temperatures.
“For areas just to the north and west of Edmonton, we’re going to see higher accumulations, likely on the order of 10 to 15 cm, and then the areas farther south and east towards the Edmonton area, Lloydminster, Cold Lake, likely on the order of five to 10 cm associated with that particular system early next week.”

Through the middle of next week, northern parts of the province are expected to see overnight lows in the mid to high minus 20s, while the south, still colder than usual, will see overnight lows closer to the mid minus teens.
