Large portions of Alberta saw heavy rainfall last weekend, and now another round of storms is forecast to soak the province this weekend.
The most recent round prompted an Alberta Emergency Alert for Edmonton, St. Albert, Stony Plain, and Beaumont on Sunday, urging residents to avoid non-essential water use. The alert warned that heavy rainfall over the previous 24 hours had pushed the region’s stormwater system to capacity, with localized flooding and sewer backups reported in neighbouring communities.
Many Albertans took to social media to share what their neck of the woods looked like due to the rampant rainfall and its aftermath.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) meteorologist Chloe Katsademas, a fresh round of rain is set to target portions of Alberta over the weekend in another “large-scale event.”
The cause of the next rainfall event is due to another low-pressure system set up in the province on Friday evening, with impacts in central and southern Alberta.
Rainfall will be expected throughout the day on Saturday and into Sunday, with that low-pressure system starting to move out of the way. A chance of showers is also on tap in those already drenched areas closer to Monday; however, that’s a little bit more uncertain this far out.
“We can be pretty confident that there will be some rainfall. It’s going to be another large-scale event that should occur this weekend,” Katsademas said, but at this point, ballpark amounts and specific areas where the most rain may fall are still too far out to predict.
“There should be some significant amounts in some areas, similar to last weekend. This setup is definitely a little bit out of the ordinary, a little bit more frequent than the normal.”
Thanks to the threat of a new system dumping plenty of precipitation in parts of Alberta, Katsademas added that even any sort of more moderate levels of rainfall could still be significant due to the vulnerabilities of how saturated many areas currently are.
With renewed fears of flooding affecting parts of the province this upcoming weekend, Katsademas recommends keeping an eye on ECCC’s latest weather forecasts and rainfall warnings, and monitoring Alberta Emergency Alerts and other advisories for updates.
Making sure your sump pumps and ducts are clear is also a good idea to check before any more rain materializes.
