According to a survey released by Restaurants Canada, 800,000 jobs have been lost in the country’s restaurant sector due to coronavirus.

The national, not-for-profit association has also provided details about what this looks like for Alberta as a province.

Approximately 95,000 people have lost their jobs in the Alberta food service sector since March 1, the survey revealed.

These numbers come from information collected by Restaurants Canada between March 25 and March 29, 2020.

“Alberta’s $12 billion food service industry represents 3.4% of the province’s GDP and is the province’s third-largest private sector employer. If conditions do not improve, Restaurants Canada estimates that Alberta’s foodservice sales for the second quarter of 2020 will be down nearly $2.5 billion.”
