$65M recreation centre in the works for small hamlet southeast of Calgary
A small Alberta hamlet could be getting a major new recreation centre, with plans for a $65 million facility moving forward.
The proposed facility is being planned by Cypress County and would be built in Dunmore, a small hamlet located just outside of Medicine Hat.
According to its website, Cypress County Council directed administration to prepare a request for proposal (RFP) for the design-build of the recreation centre on Aug. 18, 2026.
The proposed $65 million facility could include twin sheets of ice and up to six sheets of curling ice, along with supporting spaces and amenities.
“Council recognizes that a project of this scale is a significant investment in the future of Cypress County,” said Mayor Dan Hamilton in a release.

“Moving to the RFP stage will give us the information we need to better understand what can be delivered within the $65 million budget while ensuring we continue to make responsible financial decisions on behalf of our residents.”
The proposed location for the new rec centre is at Dunmore Junction, which the county says could help support the continued growth of the area.
The project’s design and scope have not been finalized, with the RFP process expected to provide more information on costs and options.
The county is also looking into grants, partnerships and sponsorships to help fund the project without increasing residential property taxes.

This isn’t the only recreation centre in the works or getting an upgrade in Alberta. A Calgary leisure centre that was built in the ‘80s is currently going through a $51 million renovation, and plans are moving ahead on a huge $230 million project in Airdrie.
