Airdrie is getting a massive recreation upgrade with plans moving ahead for a new $230 million multi-purpose rec centre in the city.
City Council has approved an accelerated construction approach for the new rec centre, called SW Recreation Centre, allowing the entire facility to be built at once instead of in phases.
The facility is expected to include a pool and aquatics areas, a fitness centre, a family activity zone, arenas, a fieldhouse, a gymnasium, and a public indoor running track.

Under the facility’s original approach, the amenities would have opened over several years. The updated plan will see the full centre constructed together, with it now projected to open in 2030.
āThis decision reflects Councilās strategic focus on delivering long-term infrastructure that supports Airdrieās growth and enhances community well-being. By accelerating the SW Recreation Centre, we are providing high-quality recreation spaces sooner, helping residents stay active, connected and supported as our community continues to grow,ā said Mayor Heather Spearman in a release.

By moving forward with the single-phase construction, the City says it expects to reduce construction time, improve efficiency, and save between 6.4 and 8.6 per cent in construction costs.
The project follows a site master plan approved by Council in June 2025, outlining the long-term vision for the recreation centre.
The Airdrie rec centre is currently moving into the detailed design phase, and construction is expected to begin in 2027.
