Here's how to get informed leading up to the 2026 Olympics plebiscite

Calgary has a big decision to make this November, one that could land the Olympics back in the city eight years down the line.

Following a City Council vote that approved a city-wide plebiscite regarding whether or not Calgary should continue on with a bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics, the City of Calgary plans to launch a public engagement program in an effort to educate voters on what exactly is at stake.

The program will start on October 1 and feature open houses, pop-up events, and online surveys so that the city can both educate the public on what they’re voting for, as well as get a sense of what information Calgarians need before casting their ballots.

Open houses will be held around the city between October 16 to 24, and a full list of dates, times, and locations can be found at the bottom of this article.

Information favouring the ‘No’ side of the debate can be found at the website for No Calgary Olympics, an organization that has been the voice of opposition to the potential bid.

Their resources delve into contrasts between the 1988 Winter Games hosted by Calgary and the potential 2026 Winter Games, whether or not Calgary can afford to host in 2026, and if the International Olympics Committee is offering enough to the prospective host city.

Positive views can be found by heading to the aptly-named Yes Calgary 2026’s website, which explores the potential benefits that may come with winning the rights to host the 2026 Olympics.

The city’s official draft hosting plan concept, created by the Calgary 2026 team headed by CEO Mary Moran, lays out the expected costs of the Games and potential benefits that may come.

Voters are encouraged to explore all available resources before casting their vote for the 2026 Olympics plebiscite in November.
