Navigating airport trips without a car can be intimidating, and getting to Victoria International Airport (YYJ) or Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is not as easy as you might think.

Here’s how to do it from downtown Victoria.

To YYJ (Victoria International Airport)

Located near Sidney, about 25 km north of downtown Victoria, YYJ is accessible by BC Transit Route 72 or 87.

From almost every stop on Douglas Street in downtown Victoria, you can hop on either the #72 or #87 bus. Exit at the McTavish exchange then board the #88 bus which drops you at the airport.

By car, the airport is about 25 minutes away, and about $60 for a cab. By transit, you’ll need to allow roughly 60 to 75 minutes for the journey, but only need $2.50 for a BC Transit day pass.

To YVR (Vancouver International Airport):

If you’re travelling from downtown Victoria, you’ll need to take the Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen ferry. Here’s how to get to the ferry from downtown Victoria:

  • Take BC Transit Route 70 or 72 for about 60 to 75 minutes to Swartz Bay Ferry terminal.
  • Alternatively, book the BC Ferries Connector, which can take you directly to YVR in a shorter time span but costs around $75 for a reservation.

If you’re using public transit after arriving at Tsawwassen, catch the #620 bus to Bridgeport Station, then transfer to the Canada Line SkyTrain to reach YVR. In total, the fares to take public transit to YVR will cost $25 (including BC Transit, a walk-on BC Ferries pass, and Translink).

Pro Tips

  • Transit schedules can vary, so check BC Transit or TransLink apps for the most up-to-date departure times.
  • Ferries are busy during peak travel times — plan your trip early and give yourself plenty of time to make connections.

Whether you’re jetting off from YYJ or YVR, leave the stress behind by planning now — especially as the holidays approach!
