The FIFA World Cup trophy will be getting a nice little tour of Vancouver in the next few days.

A public viewing of the famed soccer trophy is set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jack Poole Plaza in Downtown Vancouver. The winner’s trophy will be on hand to mark an official FIFA World Cup 26 welcome by the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Indigenous cultural performances will take place between 9:45 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Organizers note that this is a “photo opportunity” only, available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This is the second announced viewing of the FIFA World Cup winner’s trophy, as it’ll also be available to see for free Tuesday at the Italian Cultural Centre in East Vancouver.

East Van native and FIFA vice president Victor Montagliani was absolutely beaming when speaking about bringing the trophy to his hometown.

“East Vancouver was built by immigrant communities whose cultures created the rich fabric of this neighbourhood – including a deep love for football. I’m proud to have grown up here,” Montagliani said. “Seeing the FIFA World Cup Winner’s Trophy in East Van is a full-circle moment for me – and a chance for the community to begin celebrating what’s to come.”

As one of 16 FIFA World Cup host cities, Vancouver is set to host seven matches at BC Place in June and July next year. Along with Toronto, Vancouver is one of two Canadian host cities, as the rest of the North American hosted tournament will be played in the United States and Mexico.

While the U.S. and Mexico have hosted a men’s World Cup before, this is a first for Canada, which also hosted the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015.
