A young woman is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after a horrifying weekend accident. Now, a GoFundMe has been started to help cover the countless surgeries and rehabilitation that she’ll have to endure.

According to the fundraiser, 24-year-old Desiree was struck by a vehicle on Saturday morning, at approximately 12:30 am.

Amber Jackman and Ashley Danh, the two GoFundMe organizers, write that the driver was “believed to be under the influence” and that Desiree was “trapped under the vehicle and dragged for five to seven blocks until the driver noticed.”

She was rushed to the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) where she faces the long road to recovery from the devastating injuries. Jackman and Danh say it’s undetermined how long a recovery process will take and whether or not Desiree will face life-long ailments.

“Desiree has shown signs of consciousness but is still in extremely critical conditions and has already undergone multiple surgeries,” they write. “We are making this page in hopes of raising money to help cover her living expenses, as well as to go towards future medical bills and legal fees when that time comes.”

“It is unknown how long her recovery will be and when she will be able to work again.”

The GoFundMe’s most recent update, which was posted on Tuesday, says that Desiree has already undergone three surgeries, with another planned for Wednesday to begin reconstructing her face.

Jackman and Danh also note that she was struck by a US-based driver and say that “US insurance policies can be as low as $20,000.”

“The likelihood is poor that we will receive enough endurance money to cover the many years of rehabilitation Desiree will need,” they write. “On top of that, any reconstructive work she may want or need down the road, including a prosthetic eye she may want.”

The Ontario native, who’s described as an adventurous, free-spirited young woman, is expected to be in the hospital for the next six to 12 months, based on how surgery goes. Other parts of her body, such as her legs and arms, will need to heal and close before surgery can be performed.

The GoFundMe has so far raised $29,229 of its $1,000,000 goal.

Daily Hive has reached out to the Vancouver Police Department for further comment but did not hear back by time of publication.
