Woman dies in White Rock RCMP jail cell

White Rock RCMP says a woman held in their custody was found dead in a jail cell on Tuesday morning.

According to a release, the 58-year-old woman was arrested on Friday on an outstanding warrant. On Tuesday, on the same day she was scheduled to appear in court, she was seen by Emergency Health Services at the request of police and remained in custody.

However, shortly after at 10:38 a.m., she was discovered lying on the cell floor and unresponsive. There were attempts to revive her, but she was later deemed deceased.

Few details are available at this time. Following protocol, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. will be conducting an investigation into the police in-custody death.
