Winter Storm Warning calls for 40 cm of snow in parts of interior BC

Environment Canada has issued several weather warnings ahead of the Remembrance Day long weekend.

Warnings have been issued for the following areas:

  • Peace River and Fort Nelson are under a Snowfall Warning
  • Inland sections of the North Coast are under a Rainfall Warning
  • Highway 97 – Pine Pass is under a Winter Storm Warning

The weather agency says that the warnings are the result of a pacific and arctic front that will be moving into the northern interior over the weekend.

“Long periods of snow, heavy at times, are expected in the region,” says Environment Canada.

Peace River can expect between 25 to 30 cm of snow by Saturday evening, although southern sections could receive 10 to 15 cm less.

Southern sections of Fort Nelson, including Sikanni Chief, are expected to receive 20 to 25 cm of snow. Fortunately, the community of Fort Nelson will receive much less snowfall — totals near 10 cm.

Environment Canada also says that “hazardous winter conditions are expected”  for Highway 97 – Pine Pass.

“Long periods of snow are expected with total snowfall amounts of 30 to 40 cm forecast by Sunday evening,” reads the storm warning. “The heaviest snowfall is expected on Friday night and Saturday. Gusty winds behind the Arctic front may also give reduced visibilities in blowing snow starting Friday night.”

Drivers are reminded to use winter tires or chains and to adjust to driving conditions, or, if possible, to postpone travel or take alternate routes.
