Whitecaps' Thomas Müller signs on for another season in Vancouver
Thomas Müller is here to stay, for a little while longer anyway.
The Vancouver Whitecaps delivered great news on Tuesday morning, with the announcement that Müller has signed a Designated Player contract extension through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season.
Müller was previously unsigned beyond 2026, causing some to wonder about the 37-year-old German’s future.
While his age might suggest retirement isn’t far away, Müller’s play says otherwise. He has a team-high 31 goal contributions (19 goals, 12 assists) in 45 appearances since joining the Whitecaps from Bayern Munich in August of last year. Müller has undoubtedly made an impact on the Whitecaps, who now have a 19W-4L-6D record in his 29 MLS starts, including the MLS Cup Playoffs.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here from the beginning,” said Müller. “Vancouver has been very open and welcoming to me, and I’ve felt that same spirit throughout the club. We have an offensive, possession-based style that is fun to play and fun to watch, and you can really feel the excitement around the team and the city right now. The fans are enjoying it, and I think everyone wants to be part of what we are building.
“For me, it’s still so much fun to be out on the pitch every week, and I feel good physically. I’m very happy to continue this journey with the ‘Caps, and I’m looking forward to what we can achieve together this year and next year in the Sprint Season.”
2027 will be a transition year for MLS, which is aligning its schedule with the rest of the soccer world. The Sprint Season begins in February, with an abbreviated 14-match regular season and the MLS Cup awarded by May. The 2027-28 season will run from July 2027 to May 2028.
