Thomas Müller has been everything the Vancouver Whitecaps could have expected, and more, since arriving in the summer of 2025.
He’s been a force on the pitch, helping lift a young Whitecaps squad to new heights. Off the pitch, Müller has been a marketing godsend for the ‘Caps, with his unique, personable aura.
But he’s currently unsigned for next season, leaving fans to wonder about the 37-year-old’s future plans. Is retirement in the cards, or does he want to continue playing? And if he does continue his storied career, will it be in Vancouver?
Müller says he doesn’t have a “concrete” answer.
“We are all wondering,” Müller told reporters Wednesday morning, when asked about his future. “I understand the questions, and I think about many things, but I’m very focused on the games coming up. Let’s see in the next couple of weeks what my body tells me, and then we will see. Many things are going on. No concrete answer here.”
There are several details Müller will consider when he makes a decision on his future.
“It’s always about a private situation, it’s about contract, it’s about the city we live in, it’s about the team perspective, and it’s obviously about availability, about the body and this whole package.
“It’s very important in this decision, but I feel really comfortable here. I think you can see that. I have fun with my team out there on the pitch, and the rest we’ll see.”
Whitecaps CEO and sporting director Axel Schuster confirmed that the team is interested in bringing Müller back.
“Everything has to fit well,” Schuster said. “You have [spoken] with him, and there are no reasons [not to] anticipate that we’re working on something.”
What is clear is that Müller is still having fun competing.
“I’m not here to [just to] run around a little bit. I’m here to compete. That’s almost the only reason [I’m here],” Müller said. “As long as you see me here, the competitor is still burning.”

The WFC 2 season has come to an end, and several players from the second team have been training with the first team. That includes Valter Sedin, who was part of the red team during training.
“You mean the son of Henrik?” Müller said when asked about the 19-year-old with a famous father. “He was in the defensive part, so he was kind of just running after the ball. They did a great job, the red team. We had no big chances to score. What that means about Mr. Sedin, I think we have to wait a bit.”
With the Whitecaps missing several key players to international duty, might there be an opportunity for Sedin to earn a first team call-up when Vancouver hosts DC United?
“We have to figure that out,” said Whitecaps head coach Jesper Sørensen.

Injury updates
Whitecaps captain Ryan Gauld is dealing with a lower-body “tweak” and did not participate in training on Wednesday morning. He’s expected to return to training on Thursday.
“He got a little tweak the other day in the game,” Jesper Sørensen told the press. “He should be fine for the upcoming game.”
Whitecaps midfielder Jeevan Badwal has left Canada’s training camp in Toronto with a hamstring injury. Needless to say, the 20-year-old Surrey native won’t be available for selection on Saturday.
Another big BC Place crowd on Saturday
The Whitecaps are expecting a crowd of 24,000 plus on Saturday night at BC Place when they take on D.C. United. This will mark the 10th time this season the Whitecaps have had a crowd of more than 23,000.
