Vancouver Whitecaps tease temporary return to Swangard Stadium

Without a home due to the FIFA World Cup, the Vancouver Whitecaps are temporarily headed back to Swangard Stadium.

The Whitecaps teased the news on social media, posting a video of the Burnaby stadium they used to call home.

Daily Hive can confirm that the Whitecaps will host a Canadian Championship quarter-final match at Swangard Stadium on July 8. The match is against Calgary-based CPL club Cavalry FC.

Swangard is the home stadium for Vancouver Rise FC, which began play out of the Burnaby-owned facility during the inaugural season of the Northern Super League in 2025. The stadium holds a capacity of 4,650 for Rise matches.

It’s been a while since the Whitecaps last played at Swangard — the club’s home field from 1987 to 2010.

The Whitecaps played most of their inaugural MLS season at Empire Field in 2011, before moving into BC Place once renovations were complete.

BC Place renovations are also part of the story here.

The Whitecaps last hosted an MLS match at BC Place on April 25. Construction is currently underway at BC Place to get it ready for the World Cup, and that includes the installation of a temporary natural grass surface.

Vancouver is set to host its first FIFA World Cup match on June 13, when Australia takes on Türkiye. The first match at BC Place featuring Canada is on June 18.

The Whitecaps will get their home stadium back on Aug. 1.

The BC Lions are in a similar predicament, as they won’t host a game at BC Place until July 25.

Their first preseason game is scheduled for May 23 in Langford, on Vancouver Island. The first two Lions regular-season home games will be played in Kelowna, June 27 against the Calgary Stampeders and July 4 against the Edmonton Elks.
