Logos coming down as BC Place's FIFA makeover has begun

There’s a lot of work going on at BC Place right now.

Walk around the stadium, and you’ll see and hear multiple construction crews at work. They’re getting it ready for the FIFA World Cup, ahead of Vancouver’s first match in less than six weeks’ time.

The most jarring change, given recent events, is the removal of Vancouver Whitecaps logos.

BC Lions logos are being removed, too, as will any imagery that isn’t owned by FIFA or its partners.

Next week, on May 14, FIFA will formally take over control of BC Place through the end of the tournament.

There’s even more going on inside the stadium, as a natural grass surface is being installed. Along with the new pitch, irrigation and lighting will be set up in order to keep the surface alive while the BC Place roof is closed.

The FIFA World Cup kicks off June 11, with matches taking place in Canada, the United States, and Mexico until the final in New Jersey on July 19.

Vancouver is one of 16 host cities and will host seven matches, beginning with a June 13 match between Australia and TĂźrkiye.

Canada will play at least two matches at BC Place, against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24. They’ll remain at BC Place for the Round of 32 (July 2) and Round of 16 (July 7) if they can win their group.

Other matches taking place in Vancouver include Egypt vs. New Zealand (June 21) and Belgium vs. New Zealand (June 26).
